Adding a custom stylesheet

A custom stylesheet can be added to a Falcon site. The recommended way to add some custom styles is to edit the extra empty stylesheet that the site offers.

To set  this up the first time

Step 1:

  • Go to Site Setup > Zope Management Interface.
  • From the list available, select portal_skins (Controls skin behaviour (search order etc))
  • Select plone_styles.
  • Select ploneCustom.css and click on the button that says 'Customize'.
  • You will now be in the customisable version of the style sheet and can add styles that you need.

After you have done this the first time to set up, the stylesheet will then be found at Site Setup > Zope Management Interface> portal_skins (Controls skin behaviour (search order etc)) > custom.

Step 2:

  • Go to Site Setup > Zope Management Interface.
  • From the list available, select portal_css (Registry of CSS files)
  • Scroll to the bottom of the list - ploneCustom.css will be the last style sheet
  • Uncheck the boxes for 'Merging allowed?' and 'Caching allowed?' and save the change

Again, this is only needed for the first time you add the custom stylesheet.

Subsequent changes to the stylesheet

You can now access the stylesheet directly at the stylesheet will then be found at Site Setup > Zope Management Interface> portal_skins (Controls skin behaviour (search order etc)) > custom

The easiest way to work with adding styles is to:

  • have two tabs or windows open, so you can add the code and then adjust the style and save without having to move back and forth, and
  • have Firebug installed in your browser (or use a different developer add-on) so you can see if your style changes are being applied.

You will need to refresh the browser to see the changes - if you are working with a site through the url starting http://www-falcon.csx.cam.ac.uk/site/ this will be straightforward, but working with your sitename you will have to ensure you refresh the cache as well ( see instructions).

If your added styles don't seem to be taking effect, email  for advice.
